Membership

In order to be considered a candidate for the Degrees of Freemasonry you must:

  • Be male
  • Age 18 or older
  • Believe in a Supreme Being
  • Come of your own free will
  • Be of good morals, and of good reputation

One of the oldest traditions of Masonry is not to solicit members, or have “member drives.” You must approach us with your interest. You can do this in one of two ways. First, you may contact the Grand Secretary at grandsecretary@dcgrandlodge.org for help in contacting a Lodge, or if you already know what Lodge you are interested in, find them on our Lodge page and contact them directly.

When speaking with the Lodge, you will need to find a time when you can visit the Lodge during an event and meet the Brothers. After your visit, you may ask for a “petition,” or a Masonic application form.

Once you have completed the petition, you will need to get the signatures of two Masons who recommend you for membership in their Lodge. If you need assistance with this, you may contact the Lodge Secretary. You may then return your application with the appropriate application fee (ask the Lodge Secretary or Treasurer how much they require with the submission of your petition.)

After you submit your petition, the Lodge will schedule a meeting with you and a few Brothers of the Lodge to discuss your application and answer any questions you may have. They will report back to the Lodge at a future meeting, and your petition will be voted on.

You will be notified by the Lodge on the outcome of the vote. Should you be accepted as a candidate for the Degrees, you will receive further instructions about the three Degree ceremonies. After you have completed all three Degrees, you will become a Master Mason, or a full member of the Lodge.
